It looks like Dr. Mohit Bhandari and his team have striven to make India healthier. 61 surgeries accomplished in 12 hours. 61 Lives changed for the better by Dr. Bhandari and his team. “At 5:30 am on 7 March, my team and I had started the first surgery, and the chain continued and stopped at 4:45 pm after completing 61 successful Bariatric Operations,” Dr. Bhandari told us.

The surgeries were planned in 10 rounds, with six patients each. A team of 100+ members with their expertise and pace led by Dr. Bhandari completed these surgeries in less than 12 hours.

“Not a single surgery was performed in haste, and it has never been the objective to create a record. But as all these patients were waiting for the surgeries and Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics Centre has adequate equipment, infra, and a dexterous team to perform these many surgeries in a day, we took this task in our hands.” Dr. Bhandari said.

Elective Surgery Safety Parameters During COVID-19 Pandemic

After the lockdown was imposed in all over the world, government has declared to stop the elective surgeries till the time COVID-19 goes away. Elective surgeries are those surgeries that doesn’t involve a medical emergency, the procedures that are scheduled in advance and need not to be performed in a hurry. Government agencies suggested a temporary halt in elective surgeries amidst the COVID-19 emergency situation, which Dr. Mohit Bhandari feels is right. According to him, there are two good reasons behind this suggestion given by government agencies-

The first and the most important reason is to save the facilities of hospitals for COVID-19 patients who are in an emergency. Facilities like ICU, OPD area, Laboratories, X-ray, CT Scan, Sonography are needed to test the patients and to treat them in the best possible way.
The second reason being the patients who are coming for elective surgery from around the world can be coronavirus carriers.

According to Dr. Mohit Bhandari, in order to restart the hospitals for the treatment of elective surgery patients, there are two significant things to be taken care of-

We need to make sure that none of the areas, wards, staff or facilities is infected by the coronavirus. The hospital should be in green belt.
The patients who come for the elective surgery, and the attendees along with them, should be examined properly for the corona virus before beginning any type of treatment. How are Obesity and COVID-19 infection linked to?

In the time when COVID-19 is spreading like a wildfire, people who are morbidly obese have greater chances of catching the infection. But what can be the reason behind this? Dr. Mohit Bhandari explains the reasons why obesity and corona virus are linked together-

In our body, there are fat cells called “Adipocytes”. There are multiple receptors present on these fat cells. One receptor called Angiotensin, is found the most in fatty cells. It is found that affinity of the virus present in COVID-19 is more towards angiotensin receptors, which is why we can see corona virus affecting obese people more.

Second reason is improper working of lungs in obese people. Breathing problem can be seen very commonly in obese patients due to which there are greater chances of developing Pneumonia.

There are two types of immunity. Innate immunity and Acquired immunity. In obese people, Innate and Acquired immunity both are less due to deposition of fat. And because of low immunity, fighting with any type of virus becomes seriously low in obese people.
